What did Didactic Literature Teach? Change‐Ringing Manuals, Printed Miscellanies and Forms of Active Reading <sup>☆</sup>

چکیده

This paper takes the practice of change-ringing as a case study to examine forms, transmission, and effects early modern didactic literature. The novelty change-ringing, which was invented very quickly spread in seventeenth century, offers an opportunity test out contours learning from printed books. Tracing dissemination its instructions miscellanies instructional literature, comparing poetic ones, I suggest that what might be most at stake change-ringing's written texts is creation educated audience for, rather than practitioners of, practice. situate my argument among recent work on literature propose renewed role for literary techniques textual analysis bibliography manuals.
